The Velvet Underground ~ Venus in Furs (different version)
This is an amazing scratchy take of one of my favorite VU song. It is from a lost acetate pressing for Scepter Records made in April of 1966….it was found in a NYC flea market, and was the very first recorded material for a band still completely unknown, even to Warhol.
Bon Iver w/St. Vincent ~ Roslyn
No one heard this song because it was on the Twilight soundtrack… tis a shame really, because it’s amazing and a favorite of mine. it’s perfect for this cold rainy night in Charleston.
The Shangri-La’s ~ Give Him A Great Big Kiss.
ummm, this song is bad ass! it’s also one of the strangest musical recordings i’ve ever heard, the timing is all wonky and it’s got about three different beats going in it.. it starts out all drums/bongos, then this weirdly strummed guitar comes in, as well as a cheap knock off of a Phil Spector horn section… all this add’s up to being a totally incredible, bubble-gum “i like a bad boy” song.
Helen Foster ~ You Belong To Me.
it’s raining and cold in the deep, deep south and it’s that razor sharp edge between the end of winter and a full, blooming spring. it seems gentle and natural, but it’s a steely push and pull battle for the old season to loosen his grip and for springs gentle grasp to settle in and make us feel safe and warm. this song epitomizes these feelings for me right now, even in the most fierce of changes, i will ALWAY stand here and wait for you.
Ricky Nelson ~ Summertime 1962
Here is a slow burnin’ & hip shakin’ version of Summertime by the always fantastic Ricky Nelson…
side note: Deep Purple sampled this song on “Black Night”.
